The HZMB direct links Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao
There is no direct land transport linking Hong Kong with Western PRD at the moment. The
HZMB will open a new and direct connection route between Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao. It
will significantly shorten the journey for commuters/travelers and for the flow of goods between
Hong Kong and the Western PRD. The new direct route will also avoid detouring and help
minimise gas emissions by the vehicles.
From Zhuhai to Kwai Chung Container Port, the journey distance and traveling time will be
reduced from approximately 200 km and 3.5 hours currently to about 65 km and 75 minutes
respectively, representing a reduction of over 60%. From Zhuhai to the Hong Kong
International Airport, the journey distance and traveling time will be further reduced from over
200 km and approximately 4 hours to about 40 km and 45 minutes respectively, with over 80%
reduction.
It helps to reduce vehicle CO2 emission by at least 1,100 tonne per day.

Combine the HKBCF and the southern landfall of the TM-CLKL sub-sea tunnel
reclamations
In order to limit the extent of reclamation works and to minimise the impact on the environment,
we have decided to combine the reclamations of the HKBCF and the southern landfall of
TM-CLKL sub-sea tunnel. With the combined layout, we can reduce the length of seawall by
approximately 1.8 km. It helps minimise the impacts on the sea and marine environment.

Adoption of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for the construction of the TM-CLKL
sub-sea tunnel
The traditional method of constructing sub-sea tunnel by immersed tube requires complete
dredging out of the marine sediments and backfilling with sand for supporting the tunnel
segments. There are environmental concerns and impacts associated with the dredging and
dumping of the marine mud. For the TM-CLKL, the proposed sub-sea tunnel of approximately
5 km length across the Urmston Road between HKBCF and Tuen Mun is planned to be
constructed by two approximately 14 m diameter TBMs boring underneath the seabed. With
the adoption of TBM to construct the proposed sub-sea tunnels, it will avoid the dredging and
disposal of some 11 Mm3 of marine sediment that would otherwise be required for construction
by traditional immersed tube method.
